Structure

Three timelines, one manuscript

The title refers to blackballing. Members of an exclusive club voted on new applicants by dropping a white ball (yes) or a black ball (no) into an urn. A single black ball was enough to keep someone out. The film braids three stories, cutting between them, linked by the fate of Lorca's lost pages.

1932 Granada · Carlos (Milo Quifes)

Carlos, a 20-year-old from a wealthy family, applies to join Granada's casino and is blackballed over rumours that he is gay. This is the premise of Lorca's own unfinished play. The story unfolds around the failed Sanjurjada coup of August 1932.

1937 Civil War · Sebastián (Guitarricadelafuente)

Sebastián, a village trumpeter, is forced into the Nationalist army and assigned to guard a wounded Republican prisoner: Rafael Rodríguez Rapún (Miguel Bernardeau), Lorca's last love. Rafael introduces him to Lorca's poetry. Drawn mostly from La piedra oscura.

2017 Athens & Madrid · Alberto (Carlos González)

Alberto, a historian and former playwright researching queer culture in Athens, inherits something unexpected from an estranged grandfather: a manuscript. He turns to Lorca scholar Isabelle Durand (Glenn Close). The character partly mirrors co-writer Alberto Conejero.

Full plot, with spoilers

1932. Carlos is blackballed from the club. Before the committee he denies being gay. During the botched Sanjurjada a mob storms the casino; Carlos escapes and climbs a snowy mountain, where he meets the Snow, personified and voiced by an old woman he met earlier (Mona Martínez plays both).

1937. An Italian air raid on Sebastián's village kills his mother. Conscripted by the Nationalists, he guards Rafael at a field hospital. The two bond over the course of their time together. Rafael asks him to recover a manuscript of Lorca's La bola negra from an apartment at Calle Alcalá 96 in Madrid and keep it safe. Rafael is executed by firing squad, and Sebastián is made part of the squad. He later retrieves the manuscript, but four pages fall to the floor and are left behind. (These are the four pages that survive in reality.)

2017. Alberto has a strained relationship with his mother, Teresa (Lola Dueñas). The inheritance turns out to be the rest of La bola negra, and Isabelle Durand confirms it is authentic. The grandfather was Sebastián, who spent his life in the countryside with another man and followed Alberto's career from a distance. Alberto and Teresa begin to reconcile. The film proposes its own answer to how Lorca's play might have ended.

Lorca's four pages and Conejero's play

La bola negra — Federico García Lorca

  • Unfinished when Lorca was murdered by Francoist forces in August 1936.
  • Only four handwritten pages survive. Two are the cast list (dramatis personae); two are the opening stage directions and a few lines of the first act.
  • Subtitle: Drama de costumbres actuales ("a drama of present-day customs").
  • It would have been Lorca's only play with an openly gay protagonist: Carlos, a young man of good family, blackballed by Granada's casino. He tells his father the reason is his homosexuality.
  • The club members in the cast list are reduced to a soldier, a banker and a lawyer.
  • Much of what we know about the plan comes from a letter Lorca wrote to the stage director Cipriano Rivas Cherif.
  • The pages are held at the Centro Federico García Lorca in Granada.
"Dan las tres de la tarde en un reloj. Es primavera. Carlos se levanta, se asoma al balcón con aire inquieto y se dirige rápidamente a la puerta de la izquierda." Opening stage direction of the surviving pages: "A clock strikes three in the afternoon. It is spring. Carlos gets up, looks out from the balcony uneasily and goes quickly to the door on the left."

La piedra oscura — Alberto Conejero

  • Two-hander premiered in January 2015 at the Centro Dramático Nacional (Teatro María Guerrero, Madrid), directed by Pablo Messiez, with Daniel Grao and Nacho Sánchez. Revived the same year due to demand.
  • A young Nationalist guard and the wounded Republican prisoner Rafael Rodríguez Rapún spend the last night before Rapún's execution together.
  • Won major 2016 Premios Max, including best author for Conejero. Later staged in New York (Repertorio Español) and Rome.
  • The title echoes Lorca's Sonetos del amor oscuro, for which Rapún is often considered a muse.
  • Los Javis showed this play to Guitarricadelafuente when they first offered him the role.
  • Conejero co-wrote the screenplay. The 1937 strand is built mostly on his play, and the 2017 protagonist, Alberto, partly reflects his own life.
History

Fact vs. fiction

The real Rafael Rodríguez Rapún

  • Born in Madrid in 1912 to a working-class family. Studied mining engineering, played football for Atlético Madrid and was active in the Socialist party (PSOE).
  • Joined La Barraca, Lorca's student touring theatre company, as an actor in 1933. Lorca called him "the man with the three Rs."
  • Became the company's secretary on the 1935 summer tour. He and Lorca fell in love.
  • After Lorca's murder he volunteered for the Republican army, trained in artillery and was sent to the northern (Cantabrian) front as a lieutenant.
  • Died on 18 August 1937 during the Battle of Santander, one year after Lorca's death. Historian Ian Gibson revived interest in him in Lorca y el mundo gay (2009).

What the film invents (spoilers)

  • Rapún's capture, the field-hospital friendship and his execution by firing squad are fiction, taken from Conejero's play. He died in combat.
  • Sebastián, Carlos, Alberto and all their families are invented.
  • There is no known complete manuscript of La bola negra. The rescued manuscript and the "lost four pages" are the film's central conceit.
  • Nené Romero is a fictional cuplé star, built from the world of real variety singers of the period.
  • The Sanjurjada (General Sanjurjo's failed coup, 10 August 1932) is real.

Cast

Who's who

The casting mixes two newcomers, a pop star in his first acting role, regulars from earlier Los Javis projects and two Hollywood names. Each profile gives the role, earlier work and background.

The leads

Sebastián · 1937

Guitarricadelafuente

Álvaro Lafuente Calvo · b. 27 Aug 1997, Benicàssim Acting debut

In the film: a village trumpeter whose mother dies in an Italian air raid. He is drafted by the Nationalists and made to guard the wounded Republican prisoner Rafael. The part is quiet and physical, and he lost a lot of weight for it.

Before: a singer-songwriter who blends folk, rumba and flamenco. He grew up between the coast and the village of Las Cuevas de Cañart (Teruel), where his grandmother lives, and that rural world runs through his songs. He started in 2017 by posting covers online. He auditioned for La Voz and Operación Triunfo and was turned down by both.

  • "Nana triste" with Natalia Lacunza (2019): No. 4 in Spain, triple platinum. This was his breakthrough.
  • "Guantanamera" (2018, double platinum) and "Ya mi mamá me decía" (platinum).
  • La cantera (2022): debut album, produced by Raül Refree, the film's composer. Reached No. 3 in Spain.
  • Spanish Leather (2025): second album, also No. 3. He was on its international tour while promoting the film.
  • Duet with Troye Sivan, "In My Room" (2023). Two Latin Grammy nominations for music videos.

Worth knowing: he is openly gay. Los Javis met him around Primavera Sound 2024, showed him La piedra oscura and told him they had written Sebastián for him. He co-wrote and sings the film's original song, "La nieve", which is in the Oscar race. The Middleburg Film Festival gave him its International Spotlight Award. About his debut he said: "It's like losing my virginity. There's only one first time."

Rafael Rodríguez Rapún · 1937

Miguel Bernardeau

b. 12 Dec 1996, Valencia

In the film: Lorca's last love, a real historical figure. He is wounded by shrapnel, held prisoner in a military hospital and guarded by Sebastián. He is the one who asks Sebastián to save Lorca's manuscript. Critics singled out the Rafael–Sebastián story as the emotional core of the film. It is widely seen as the most important role of his career.

Before: one of Spain's best-known young TV actors. He trained in Los Angeles at Santa Monica College and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

  • Élite (Netflix, 2018–21): Guzmán, the role that made him famous internationally.
  • 1899 (Netflix, 2022), from the creators of Dark.
  • Zorro (Prime Video, 2024): the title role.
  • Querer (Movistar Plus+, 2024): Feroz nomination for best supporting actor.
  • Terra Alta (2025) as detective Melchor Marín; the film La fiera (2026).

Worth knowing: he is the son of actress Ana Duato (Cuéntame cómo pasó) and producer Miguel Ángel Bernardeau, and the nephew of choreographer Nacho Duato. His sister María Bernardeau has a cameo in the film. He dated singer Aitana from 2018 to 2022.

Alberto · 2017

Carlos González

b. 24 May 1997, Cintruénigo (Navarra) First film lead

In the film: a historian and former playwright researching queer culture in Athens. He inherits a manuscript from the grandfather his mother refused to talk about. The character is a tribute to co-writer Alberto Conejero. He lives with Juan Pablo (Julio Torres). Whether they are lovers or flatmates is deliberately left unclear.

Before: trained at the Corazza acting school in Madrid and built his career on TV, often in queer roles.

  • Veneno (2020): Alfonso, young Cristina's loyal best friend. His first job with Los Javis.
  • Maricón perdido (2021): his first lead, playing the young Bob Pop in the writer's autobiographical series.
  • Cardo (2023), produced by Los Javis: a Demon.
  • Amar es para siempre (2023–24): Rafael Conde, 149 episodes of the daytime drama.
  • Mariliendre (2025, musical series), La vida breve (2025, as the castrato Farinelli, which earned a Unión de Actores nomination) and La canción (2025).

Worth knowing: "I've been chasing them since I was 18, when they were selling T-shirts in a theatre lobby for La llamada." Next up: the romantic comedy A una isla de ti (Málaga Festival 2026).

Carlos · 1932

Milo Quifes

24 · from Granada Acting debut

In the film: a young man from a good Granada family who is blackballed by the city's casino because people suspect he is gay. He has to win over the club's board, backed by his sister (Natalia de Molina) and pushed by his father (Antonio de la Torre). He is the protagonist Lorca himself had sketched.

Before: no acting experience. He studied Biology in Granada and went viral on TikTok after announcing that he was dropping out and felt lost. In 2024 he published a novel, Ultravioleta, a queer love story.

Worth knowing: accounts of how he was cast differ. He says he answered an Instagram casting call he thought was for extras and passed several rounds. Catalan broadcaster 3Cat reports that his novel caught Los Javis' attention and that he skipped the usual process. "Los Javis found me. I was coming out of a very bad period." The Spanish press has called him the breakout of the season.

Teresa · 2017

Lola Dueñas

Nené Romero · special appearance

Penélope Cruz

b. 28 Apr 1974, Alcobendas (Madrid)

In the film: a Madrid variety star, a cupletista, who travels to Cantabria to entertain the Nationalist troops. She meets Sebastián and encourages him to follow his desires and rebel against the order around him. She performs one of the film's big numbers singing and dancing on top of a tank, filmed with 500 extras. Her songs are "Las tardes del Ritz" and "Batallón de modistillas".

Before: Spain's most famous actress.

  • Breakthrough with Bigas Luna's Jamón, jamón (1992).
  • Almodóvar's muse: Carne trémula, Todo sobre mi madre, Volver, Los abrazos rotos, Dolor y gloria and Madres paralelas.

  • Cannes Best Actress for Volver (2006, shared with Lola Dueñas and the ensemble) and the Volpi Cup in Venice for Madres paralelas (2021). Three Goyas.

Worth knowing: Los Javis wrote the role specifically for her. It started as a single musical number and grew to include a scene with Sebastián after they talked with her. She took months of singing, dance and choreography classes. She was coached by the daughter of Olga Ramos, the "Queen of Cuplé" of Madrid nightlife. "She represents a dream of freedom that none of the protagonists has." Her son with Javier Bardem, Leo Encinas Cruz, has a cameo.

Isabelle Durand · special appearance

Glenn Close

b. 19 Mar 1947, Greenwich (Connecticut)

  • Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians (1996).
  • Three Tony Awards (including Sunset Boulevard) and three Emmys (two for Damages).

Worth knowing: according to the directors, she "devoured the script" and fell in love with it immediately. The Spanish press called her casting one of the film's biggest surprises.

Juan Pablo · 2017

Julio Torres

b. 11 Feb 1987, San Salvador

Alberto's flatmate, or possibly his partner; the film keeps it vague. Ambrossi has said that ambiguity reflected the directors' own uncertainty as their relationship ended during the shoot. Torres wrote for SNL (2016–19), where he created the "Papyrus" sketch with Ryan Gosling. He co-created and starred in HBO's Los Espookys, wrote, directed and starred in A24's Problemista (2024, with Tilda Swinton), and made HBO's Fantasmas. Both of his HBO series won Peabody Awards.

Federico García Lorca

Alberto Cortés

He is on screen only briefly, but Spanish reviewers note his striking resemblance to the poet, and he made a strong impression. He was almost unknown to film audiences. The name matches the Málaga-born playwright, director and performer (b. 1983) known for the stage piece Analphabet, whose work mixes theatre, dance and flamenco. No source we found confirms they are the same person.

The old woman / The Snow · 1932

Music

Score and songs

Raül Refree composed, produced and performed the original score, recorded with the Vienna Synchron Orchestra. The Barcelona producer is known for Rosalía's debut Los Ángeles and work with Silvia Pérez Cruz and Lina, and he scored Los Javis' La Mesías. The score mixes period music from the 1930s with flamenco, Greek rebetiko and 2000s club hits.

"La nieve" is the original song, written and sung by Guitarricadelafuente with Refree. Some sources also credit Lucas Durán. It plays late in the film and ties Sebastián to Lorca through snow, an image Lorca often used for grief and loss. It is in the race for Best Original Song at the Oscars.

The trailer uses an arrangement by Refree and Pablo Lluch of Camarón de la Isla's "La leyenda del tiempo", a 1979 song that sets Lorca's own verses.

Viewing notes

Before you watch

It is long

About 2h35–2h39. The three strands are intercut, so the connections land gradually and pay off in the final act.

Read a little Lorca

Rafael reads Lorca's poetry to Sebastián. The Sonetos del amor oscuro and Romancero gitano make good preparation.

Expect the surreal

The film is mostly realist, but it turns Lorquian at times. The Snow speaks.

Keep an eye out

For cameos from Spain's queer cultural scene, Penélope Cruz's cuplé numbers, and the four pages that fall to the floor.

Where to see it

Spain: in cinemas now, later on Movistar Plus+. US: cinemas from 16 Oct, Netflix from 2 Dec. UK: 6 Nov.

Listen after

Refree's full soundtrack is out 16 October. "La nieve" is the song people leave humming.
